For medium holes: 

Sand the surface until smooth

Clean off dust

Use a metal drywall patch

Peel backing off patch and press firmly in place 

Apply drywall compound over patch until smooth

Let it dry 

Lightly sand until smooth

Repeat until you can no longer see it

For larger holes: 

Cut a piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole

Make an outline of the piece on the wall around the hole

Check behind hole for wires or plumbing

Cut out the drawn area

Screw in two wooden boards behind the drywall to keep the patch from falling through

Screw the patch to the boards

Apply drywall compound

Let it dry 

Lightly sand until smooth

Repeat until you can no longer see it
